by on Nov.28, 2018

The 2019 Genesis G70 captured Motor Trend's Car of the Year award in Los Angeles.

The widely praised Genesis G70 landed a critical victory to mark the start of the annual Los Angeles Auto Show by being named the Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Designed to challenge the likes of the vaunted BMW 3 Series, the G70 is the third new model from the Korean luxury brand spun off by Hyundai barely two years ago.

News Now!

Separately, the Ram 1500 was named Motor Trend Truck of the Year, while parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles took home a second trophy for the Jeep Wrangler honored as the SUV of the Year. While the Motor Trend Car of the Year trophy has traditionally nabbed the top headlines, these two awards are likely to resonate more broadly with consumers in a market where light trucks now account for about two of three new vehicle sales. Audi Teases New e-Tron Ahead of LA Launch

Performance model will share underpinnings with new Porsche Taycan.

by on Nov.26, 2018

Audi is teasing its second electric vehicle before the first has even come to market. The new e-tron GT will debut at the L.A. Auto Show later this week.

Audi hasn’t even delivered its first all-electric model to showrooms yet, but the automaker is already teasing a second battery-car that will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this week.

These intentionally blurry images are meant to give us a hint of what the e-tron GT will look like and, if you squint just a little you might get a sense of déjà vu. Remove the four-ring Audi logo and you might notice the GT has a lot in common with the new Porsche Taycan that also will hit the market next year. Both, it turns out, share the same basic platform.

Product News!

Officially, what Audi will reveal in L.A. is a prototype, but don’t let that fool you. With relatively modest changes, what you see is what you will soon get, the second of three all-electric models that will appear in quick succession from the Volkswagen Group’s biggest luxury brand. (more…)

Advanced Driving Systems Can Be Misleading and Don’t Always Work as Promised

Autopilot, ProPilot, Pilot Assist, names can confuse motorists expecting full autonomy.

by on Nov.16, 2018

This Model X crash reveals the short comings of Autopilot and, potentially, other similarly named advanced driver assistance systems.

Soon after Tesla first introduced its Autopilot system in October 2014, videos began popping up on YouTube showing owners doing things like jumping into the back seat while their cars cruised down the highway. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk was shown in his Model S sedan, hands out of the window, rather than on the steering wheel.

After a couple high-visibility crashes, Tesla now takes pain to make sure its owners know Autopilot isn’t a fully autonomous system – at least not yet. But not everyone seems to be getting the message. And it’s not just Tesla. With Nissan adding ProPilot Assist to some new models and Volvo opting for Pilot Assist.

Product News Now!

The new car market is experiencing a flood of new advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, that claim to help drivers stay in their lanes, brake automatically, and even change lanes by simply tapping the turn signal. But testing by AAA finds that many of these systems don’t work as promised – at least all the time. And, worse, the names manufacturers have chosen may lead to a false sense of security, some motorists believing these systems can but drive all but fully autonomously. (more…)

Germans Top Total Quality Awards – Again

Mercedes-Benz SL named #1 model in 2018 owner survey.

by on Oct.11, 2018

The Mercedes-Benz SL took the top honors in this year's Total Quality Awards, which were dominated by German automakers.

The Mercedes-Benz SL was the top-ranked vehicle in the annual Total Quality Awards, narrowly beating out last year’s winner, the Porsche Macan.

The awards are designed to measure not only conventional quality data, but also how owners click with their vehicles on an emotional level, according to Strategic Vision, the California-based research firm that pulls the study together. And the SL easily overwhelmed the competition with a mixture of real and perceived quality.

News Now!

“Mercedes-Benz is in a Renaissance period for the brand,” said Strategic Vision President Alexander Edwards. “With current innovative features and performance styling, Mercedes has clearly focused on answering the challenge of being a brand for our current generation of luxury buyers. Based on the voice of the consumers, Mercedes has unquestionably answered.” (more…)
